Fact Sheet – Coffee

  • Coffee intensifies stress, causing an average 40% increase in adrenaline. This results in increased blood pressure, heart rate, perspiration, muscular tension, nervousness, and irritability.
  • Coffee increases the secretion of stomach acid by 400%, contributing to gastritis and peptic ulcer
  • Caffeine is linked to ovarian, bladder and kidney cancers
  • Coffee increases intellectual speed, but not power (working faster but not smarter)
  • Coffee stimulates the pancreas and adrenals, intensifying hypoglycemia and weakening the adrenal’s ability to respond to stress
  • Coffee reduces fertility. More than one cup a day makes a woman half as likely to conceive (American Journal of Epidemiology, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences)
  • PAH’s (polycyclic hydrocarbons), some of the worlds most powerful carcinogens, are found in large amounts in roasted coffee (as they are in charcoal broiled meat)
  • Coffee causes a significant loss of nutrients, especially magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, b vitamins, especially inositol and biotin. It interferes with iron absorption
  • Decaffeinated coffee contains methylene chloride, a toxic solvent
  • Roasted coffee is a potent source of free radicals and benzene, which contribute significantly to chronic disease and cancer
